ABOUT
HORNSEA DOG-OWNERS
Hornsea Dog Owners Club
started in 1990 in response to anti-dog propaganda and the threat of a
dog-ban in Hornsea's Hallgarth Park. During that time the club has trained
hundreds of dogs in basic obedience, many having been awarded their K.C.
Good Citizens bronze, silver and gold medals--one in the eye for the
dog-detractors!
Through various activities, most particularly its annual Dog-Show, the
club has also established strong links with, and raised money for many
dog-charities and sanctuaries, local and national. We liaise very closely
with our local vet/police-station/dog-warden and Town Council, who regard
us as setting the tone for responsible ownership, and we've
helped re-home manya stray or abandoned animal.
OBEDIENCE TRAINING
We run courses in Basic Obedience every ten weeks
throughout the year, with an option for more advanced training. Our
experienced team will also help with any canine problems, so don't struggle
on alone! And apart from learning the basics, the major spin-off of any
good class is socialisation--we can guarantee you and your dog will have
many enjoyable evenings.

SPRING/SUMMER AGILITY-COURSES 2008:
Hornsea
Dog-owners outdoor Fun Agility classes, held at Cloverfields Kennels,
Seaton,resumed recently.CURRENT COURSE FINISHES: SEPT.
1ST Come and join us then!...
it's fast, furious and a lot of fun! Put your
trainers on, and let your dog loose on our full range of equipment!
Agility originated in the mid-1970s, and was
developed to entertain spectators between judging events at dog-shows, but
it wasn't until 1978 that it was granted competition-status by the Kennel
Club.
Described as 'an
obstacle-course run against time', it is probably this description that
brought about the misconception that Agility is only about 'speed and
bounce.' Whilst it is true that speed and bounce are important
qualities in both dog and handler, control and co-operation play more than a
small part.
Over the next 8
weeks, we shall be teaching our dogs to work with us over a series of
obstacles, thus improving their co-ordination, increasing their confidence,
and, in a light and flexible manner, conditioning them to take unquestioning
direction from their handlers.D
The course we have
prepared has been carefully thought-out with the pet dog and novice-handler
in mind, so that all ages and abilities can participate: anyone wishing to
progress to more advanced training should talk to any team-member, who will
be happy to advise.
DOG-SHOW
2008
Was
held on Sunday, 10th August at Elim Gardens, Cliff Road, Hornsea, and,
despite a rogue shower that had everyone cowering under the gazebos, an
excellent time was had by all.
Hornsea's
Mayor, Councillor Beatrice Parker opened the proceedings, and Judge Jason
Colby was ably assisted by Ring-Steward Ian Wood.
Ann
Dixon and Ginny Oates were inundated with entrants, Karen kept the prizes
and rosettes coming, Ann and Ian Goldthorpe sold out of mouth-watering
cakes, and all the charity-stalls did a roaring trade.
Elaine
with Rafferty and Heather with Sammy performed a delightful
heelwork-to-music routine to "Singing in the Rain" and there was a
proud but hopeful parade of dogs needing new homes.
£500
was raised for this year's charity, Hessle Dog-Rescue, so a big thank-you to
all who helped make this year's event so successful.

HEELWORK
TO MUSIC 2004
Inspired
by Crufts, club-instructor Elaine got her act together with Rafferty, and
gave several summer demonstrations of what the two of them could do..their
finest hour being at the annual dog-show.
On
top of all this, she also passed on her expertise during the very popular
10-week heelwork to music course, which we hope to resume in 2008.

HEELWORK
TO MUSIC-A BRIEF HISTORY.
This fun sport,
which is now competitively recognised, started by accident in 1990, when
John Gilbert, a friend of Mary Ray, the top dog-trainer, asked her to do a
seminar on a chat-show.
He thought it
would add interest if she would perform a heelwork routine with one of her
dogs. During the programme, Mary chose her Belgian Shepherd, Roxy, and her
Border Collie, Toddy, to work with.
Wanting the
display to be more interesting than ordinary heelwork, she added
figures-of-eight, multiple turns, changes of pace, and positions on the
move. What Mary didn't know, however, was that John Gilbert had arranged to
have music playing in the background whilst she performed. For Roxy, he
played "Take my breath away", and for Toddy, "Eye of the
Tiger".
Peter Lewis saw
the programme, and was more than a little impressed. He asked Mary if there
was any chance that heelwork to music might catch on and gain
competition-status.
Over the
following five years, Mary gave many more demonstrations, trying to add a
variety of additional movements linking them together with heelwork, and
making the movements fit the music. In 1995, heelwork to music finally
gained competition-status, and the first competition was held in 1996--all
thanks to one woman's skill and imagination

MUSIC IS SPONSORED BY PEDIGREE PET FOODS.
